Synopsis

The reality is that most of us don’t really know what self-awareness is, and therefore how can we be self-aware? Is it even important? Yes, because when you are self-aware and know thyself, you can be the authentic leader and coach you want to be. After all, who you are, is how you lead or coach. More importantly self-awareness is the route through to self-connection, from which you can project a level of inner peace and contentment, which will support you in developing the capacity to sit and work with uncertainty.

The book is aimed primarily for leaders but is for anyone who is interested in connecting and working with others. It focuses on self-awareness and why it is essential for leading, living and working in this volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world which is full of wicked problems. Unlike other books on self-awareness this book will provide clear explanations as to what this complex construct is. The book will take each element of self-awareness explore what it is and how to develop it. Secondly, the book will explore why developing self-awareness is the route to developing deeper self-acceptance and self-connection, and with this level of self-connection how you can start to de-latch self-worth and ego from outcomes so that you can sit and lead through uncertainty.

This book is based on my PhD research, the work I have done and continue to do with leaders, coaches and teams, and more importantly my own developmental journey in this space. It is written in an accessible, practical way with exercises throughout to take you on your own self-awareness journey.

“Having had the chance to read Julia Carden’s You’re Not As Self-Aware As You Think in draft form, I can say it’s an incredibly useful book—not just for leaders, but for anyone coaching or consulting with them. Reading it, I reflected on how valuable it would have been when I was in leadership roles myself, and how it now sharpens my practice as an executive and team coach. It’s a book that prompts deep reflection, not just for the people we coach, but for ourselves too. If we’re helping others build self-awareness, we should be doing the same work. A must-read for leaders and coaches alike.”
